Why does an iPhone photo have no location?
A photo’s location isn’t something the Photos app works out later. The Camera app saves it inside the photo at the moment you take it, from GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular data. So a photo ends up with no location for one of these reasons:
- Location was off for the Camera. If Location Services is off, or the Camera is set to Never, the photo saves no place. Apple describes this setting in Manage location metadata in Photos.
- Someone shared it without location. When you share from Photos, the share sheet has an Options button with a Location switch. With it off, the copy that’s sent carries no location.
- It came through a messaging app. Many messaging apps remove photo metadata to protect privacy, so a photo a friend sent you in a chat often arrives with no place.
- It’s a screenshot or screen recording. These aren’t camera photos, so there’s no place to save.
- It was edited, exported or downloaded elsewhere. Some editing apps and websites strip metadata when they save a new copy.
- No signal for a fix. Deep in a canyon, on a plane or in a thick-walled building, the phone may not know where it is yet.
How do I turn location on for the iPhone Camera?
Follow the steps above: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, make sure it’s on, then tap Camera and choose While Using the App. Apple’s page Turn Location Services and GPS on or off has the same path and explains each option. You can also leave Precise Location on for the Camera, so photos save your exact spot rather than an approximate area.
This only affects photos you take from now on. It won’t add a location to older photos.
How do I see where a photo was taken?
Open the photo in the Photos app and swipe up, or tap the Info button. Apple’s guide See photo and video information on iPhone lists what appears there: the date and time, the camera, and where the photo was taken, with a link to view it in Maps. A photo without a location shows Add a location instead.
To see all your photos that do have a location, go to Collections and open the Map collection. Only photos with location information appear there, so it’s a quick way to spot gaps in a trip.
How do I add or change a photo’s location?
On the photo, tap the More button, then Adjust Info → Adjust Location, type the place and pick it from Map Locations. You can select a batch of photos first and set them all at once, which is handy when a whole afternoon came from a friend’s phone. To undo, go back to the same screen and tap Revert. Should I check before a trip?
Yes, it takes ten seconds. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera and make sure it isn’t set to Never. Then take a test photo and swipe up on it. If you see a map, every photo of the trip will carry its place, and you can build a route map from them later.
