We make TravelMapReel, so read this as the maker’s view. Travel Boast facts come from its own App Store listing, Google Play listing and website, checked on 30 September 2026; they can change, so check its store page before you decide.
What Travel Boast does well
Travel Boast is one of the best-known apps for animated travel map videos, and it earns that position:
- It’s live and mature. Its App Store listing shows a first release in September 2019 and regular updates since, the latest in September 2026.
- iPhone and Android. It’s on the App Store and on Google Play.
- You control the route. You choose a transport, enter your route and press start. Its website says you can define the path by hand or bring in a GPX file or a Google Maps route.
- A huge vehicle library. The App Store listing says 300 vehicles, “real and imaginary”; its website says 250+, “yes, even a horse”.
- 3D maps and your own media. The website shows 3D map views, several map styles and the option to add your own photos or videos along the route.
- Many languages. The App Store lists well over a dozen.
If you want to plan a route before a trip, show a trip you never photographed, or pick exactly which roads the animation takes, Travel Boast does that and TravelMapReel doesn’t.
The difference: who makes the route
In Travel Boast, you make the route: you enter each place (or import a track) and the app animates it.
In TravelMapReel, your photos make the route. Your iPhone saves when and where every photo was taken. From the photos you pick (up to 200 per trip), TravelMapReel:
- Groups photos taken close together into stops, named after the town or place.
- Traces the drive between stops on real roads. A leg too fast for a car becomes a flight and a sea crossing becomes a ferry, both drawn as arcs.
- Lets AI rate your photos so each stop leads with its best shot and blurry shots and screenshots go to the back.
- Renders a vertical 1080×1920 video in the cloud that ends on the trip’s distance, days and stops.
You can still edit: rename, reorder or remove stops, pick a map theme and a vehicle (car, campervan, motorbike, plane or ferry). But the starting point is a finished trip, not an empty map. When to pick which
Pick Travel Boast if:
- You’re on Android, or you want a video today.
- The trip has no photos, or you want to show a planned route before you go.
- You want to set the exact path or import a GPS track from a hiking or cycling app.
- You want an unusual vehicle: Travel Boast’s library is far larger than ours.
Pick TravelMapReel (once it’s out) if:
- You have an iPhone and a camera roll full of trip photos, and you don’t want to enter stops.
- The trip is long or old and you don’t remember the order of every town. The photo times already know it.
- You want your photos in the video, placed at the right stops, without sorting them.
- You didn’t track the trip with GPS. TravelMapReel works afterwards, even for trips from years ago, as long as the photos kept their location.
Both apps make a short video meant for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, so the choice is mostly about input: a route you enter, or photos you already have. For the whole field, including web tools and GPS trackers, see our list of travel map animation apps.
One honest limit of the photo approach
TravelMapReel can only place photos that carry a location. Photos saved from WhatsApp, screenshots and some AirDropped images lose it. The app lists those so you can place each one on the map in a couple of taps, or leave it out. If most of a trip’s photos have no location, a route you enter by hand, as in Travel Boast, is the better fit.
