What does a travel map video look like?
Scroll travel TikTok, Reels or Shorts for a minute and you’ll see the format. A map fills the vertical screen. A line starts at home and moves to the first stop, often with a small plane or car icon leading it. A photo or clip pops up, the map moves on, and the next stop appears. Many end on a summary card: distance, days, countries or stops. Most run 10 to 40 seconds, set to a trending sound.
There are a few common variations:
- The flight map. A plane flies an arc from one city or country to the next.
- The road trip. A car follows the roads, stop by stop.
- The year in travel. Every trip of the year, one after another.
- The “where I’ve been” map. Pins or countries lighting up, with no route at all.
Why is it so popular?
It tells a whole trip in one glance. A photo dump shows what you saw; a map shows where you went and how far. It also answers the comment every travel post gets (“where is this?”) before anyone asks, and the stats at the end are made for sharing.
What app do people use for the travel map trend?
There’s no single app. The videos you see come from roughly three kinds of tools:
- Video editors such as CapCut. You pan a map image with keyframes and draw the line yourself. Flexible and free to start, but manual. See the CapCut method.

How do I make my own travel map video?
Whatever tool you use, the steps are the same:
- List your stops in order. Your camera roll is the best record: it has the date and, usually, the place of every photo.
- Pick one or two photos per stop. The strongest shot first; skip the blurry ones.
- Get the route onto a map. Draw it by hand in an editor, set it in a map app, or let a photo-based app trace it.
- Export vertical. 1080×1920 is the size TikTok, Reels and Shorts use.
- Add the sound in the app you post from. That way you can use whatever is trending that week.

Tips that make the trend work
- Hook in the first second. Start on your best photo or the widest map view.
- Don’t linger. One to two seconds per stop is plenty.
- End on the numbers. Distance and days give people something to comment on.
- Check your photo locations. Screenshots and photos saved from messaging apps often have none. Here’s why some iPhone photos have no location.
