What does a road trip map video show?
The camera follows your drive across the map, stop by stop. At each stop your best photo appears with the place name and a short caption. A small vehicle leads the way along the line. At the end, the trip in numbers: how far you went, over how many days, with how many stops.
The sample in the video is a real four-day drive from Montenegro to Croatia: 163 miles and 4 stops, made from its photos alone.
Does it follow the roads I actually drove?
Between stops, the route follows real roads, not straight lines across the map. The stops themselves come from your photos: photos taken close together in time and place become one stop, named after the town or place.
The road between two stops is the likely driving route. If you took a long detour and didn’t take a single photo on it, the map won’t know. A photo at each place you stopped gives the best result.
What about ferries and flights?
Road trips rarely stay on land. TravelMapReel looks at each leg:
- A sea crossing with no road becomes a ferry, drawn as an arc over the water.
- A leg you covered faster than any car could becomes a flight, drawn as an arc through the air.
- Everything else is a drive on real roads.
So a trip that flies in, drives the coast, takes the ferry to an island and flies home reads the way it happened.

Do I need to plan anything before the trip?
Only one thing: make sure your iPhone saves a location in your photos. Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera and make sure it isn’t set to Never. Which road trips work best?
Almost any trip that moves from place to place. A few that make great videos:
- Coastal drives with lots of short hops between towns.
- National park loops, where the map shows how far apart the parks really are.
- Island hopping, where ferries and short flights break up the drive.
- Campervan trips over several weeks, with dozens of stops. Add the whole trip, up to 200 photos, and let the app pick the best shots.
- A weekend away. Three or four stops make a tight, fast video.
