What’s the difference between Memories and a map recap?
Both start from the same photos. They tell different stories.

How do I make a Memories movie of a trip?
Apple’s guide Play memory movies in Photos on iPhone describes two ways.
From an album. Any collection or album can play as a memory movie. Put the trip’s photos in an album first (in the Photos app, select them and add them to a new album). Then:
- Open the Photos app and tap Collections.
- Open the trip’s album and tap the play button to watch it as a memory movie.
With Apple Intelligence. On an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, go to Collections → Memories → Create, then describe the movie you want, for example “our road trip through Portugal in June”. Photos picks the photos, builds a storyline and sets it to music. Apple lists which iPhones and languages support this on the same page.
Photos also makes memories on its own. You’ll find them under Collections → Memories, and a big trip may show up there.
Can I change the music and length?
Yes. Apple’s page Personalize your memory movies covers it: play the memory, tap the screen, tap Customize, then choose a Memory Look (a song paired with a photographic style), change the song under Music, or set the length to short, medium or long under Transition and Duration. You can add, remove and reorder photos, and edit the title.
To send it, play the memory, tap the screen and use Share (Share or delete memories).
When is a memory movie the better choice?
- You want something quick and free, right now.
- The trip was in one place: a beach week, a city break, a wedding.
- You want music and mood more than geography.
- It’s for family, not for posting.
When is a map-based recap the better choice?
- The trip moved: a road trip, island hopping, a rail loop, several countries.
- You want people to see the route, not just the views.
- You’re posting to TikTok, Reels or Shorts, where the map format is its own trend (see the travel map trend).
- You want the numbers: how far, how many days, how many stops.
How does a map recap work in TravelMapReel?

Can I use both?
Yes, and they suit different places. A memory movie is great for the family group chat. A map recap is the one to post. Both come from the same photos, so there’s nothing extra to shoot.
One tip for either: check that your trip photos have a location. Photos uses places when it suggests memories, and a map video needs them to draw the route. If some are missing, see why some iPhone photos have no location.
